Clearing Fire Hydrants & Outdoor Vents

Company 59 would like to remind the citizens of Lower Swatara Township and surrounding communities, please clear Fire Hydrants that are blocked by snow and at least 2 feet around the hydrant. It can take extra time for firefighters to locate and clear hydrants before being able to begin firefighting efforts. Please, take a few minutes and make sure the closest fire hydrant is clear, give you and your neighbors more of a chance during a fire.

The next concern is outdoor vents on houses and trailers. If they are not cleared the vents can lead to high levles of carbon monoxide entering the home. Carbon monoxide (sometimes referred to as CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning material containing carbon. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it; but carbon monoxide can kill you. Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America.

The other final concern is Snow Packed Roofs clearing snow from your roof of excess snow to prevent ceilings from collapsing, especially if you have a flat roof. We really are not worried as much with slanted roofs but suggest it is a good idea if you have the capabilities.

Can you find the Fire Hydrant in this picture?
