Fatal Accident in the 54 Box

This Afternoon, October 1st, Company 54, Rescue 88 and 59 were dispatched to Route 230 at the “Tool Shed” for an accident with entrapment. As units went responding, updated information was given of a car vs. a tanker truck with two persons entrapped in the car, both ALS patients. Rescue 59 responded with four personnel a few moments after dispatch. Rescue 59 arrived as Rescue 88 and Engine 54 were starting extrication of the second person. The roof and passenger doors were removed already, along with the driver side rear door. The rescue crew was given the assignment of assisting with the extraction of the second patient. The crews worked to raise the dash and after a few minutes were able to free the patient by moving the tanker truck from the smaller vehicle. After gaining access from the driver’s side, the driver’s door was removed. The patient was extricated and packaged with waiting EMS units on scene. Once all of the patients were removed, the crews secured the vehicles. The crews cleaned up. Rescue 59 was released by Command 54 minutes later. One person was pronounced deceased enroute to the hospital and the other is in critical/fair condition.

It was a tough situation but Great Job by all the crews invovled.
