A cold and wet start for Co. 59 in 2011.

Today, 1-1-11, the Water Rescue Team was dispatched to the Susquehanna River for a large fuel spill to assist Company 49 (Swatara). Utility 59 and Boats 59, 59-1 all responded with full crews to launch at the Highspire Boat Landing. Chief 59 arrived on location to check the condition of the boat launch and both boats were launched to go up river to the Turnpike Bridge to start deploying booms from the shoreline to the first pillar. Once that was completed, Command 49 requested the boat to go assist Boat 49 at an inlet where the spill was found to have been coming from, which was a storm drain from the borough of Steelton. Boat 49, 59 and Company 10 along with DC HAZMAT 77, deployed more booms and pads to help contain the large spill from the shoreline. Once the crew contained the spill, Command 49 released both boat crews; both crews returned to deacon the equipment. Command 49 had crews check storm drains in the immediate area. The spill was handed over to DEP and Hazmat 77. The crews were out for over 4 hours.
