National Fire Prevention Week and Open House

October is National Fire Prevention and Safety month and this week the 7th thru the 13th is fire prevention week. This week crews from FDLS along with mutual aid companies took part in open houses at the various fire departments throughout Dauphin County along with visiting schools, daycares and businesses to promote fire prevention and safety. The week started out for FDLS at a local school, Kunkel Elementary then to Reid Elementary the following day utilizing the departments smoke house. On Thursday the 10th, A storm rolled through Dauphin County leaving the Annual Open House a wet one. At FDLS Open House had about 350 people in attendance throughout the night, which is low for the past few years but due to the downpours and heavy rain we understood the low turnout. Various companies from the surrounding area came out to show what Police, EMS and Fire Departments are all about and what kind of equipment we have to utilize in this special service. At open house, FDLS had Engine & Rescue rides, ladder trucks flying to view, the “Smoke House”, a house fire for the children to extinguish and many other vehicles and agencies to view along with talk too. The crews at FDLS love this time of year to go out and show, along with tell the community what hard work we do everyday and throughout the year. The crews at FDLS taught over 1,000 students at all the local elementary schools throughout the week.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all the companies and participants that showed up to make this event a HUGE success! We have already started preparing for next year.
